General Information
Instrumentation is a
very broad area in the sense that it has an interdisciplinary character.
There is a proliferation of a variety of Instrumentation systems
for a variety of purpose.
There is hardly any area
of Engineering, Science and Technology where Instrumentation in
one form or the other is not needed. As a certain process is becoming
more and more automated, the need for a closer monitoring of inputs
and responses become more obligatory and the instruments at the
component and sub - system levels tend to become more and more integrated.
Full cognizance has been taken of this situation while planning
instruction in this area. Students do intensive use of microprocessors
and Computers to understand the hardware and software aspect of
Intelligent Instrumentation.
Started in 1989, this
rather young division offers many courses in Electrical, Electronics
and Computer Engineering also apart from a variety of courses from
Instrumentation Technology, modern control theory, Biomedical Instrumentation,
Robotics, Industrial Electronics, Computer Controlled Instrumentation,
Artificial Intelligence etc.

Laboratories
The Curriculum for Instrumentation
has many courses in common with Electronics and Computers, apart
from several in Process Control and Instrumentation. Most of the
Laboratories are therefore shared with those of the Electronics
and Computers branches. A few laboratories like Industrial Electronic
Lab, Electrical Drivers Lab Virtual Instrumentation Lab are being
developed. The important developed laboratories are following:
Biomedical/Industrial
Electronics Lab
This Laboratory has been
established to familiarize the students with the capturing analyzing
and processing different bio signals. Biopac is an integrated instruments
which the students use for such experiments. Physiology Lab kits
and digital temperature feed back system are also used for training
the students in the area of Biomedical Instrumentation.
Instrumentation Lab
Process Control Lab
The Process Control Lab
aims at training the students in the field of Process Instrumentation,
control and optimization. A number of Pentium PCs are interfaced
with Hydraulic, Electro-pneumatic and Electro-Hydraulic systems
which are available to demonstrate dynamic processes and to monitor
process variables. A few PLC controlled systems are also used to
train the students.
Control System Lab
In this laboratory practicals
are performed on the Transducer trainer kit, Temperature Control
System, Synchro Transmitter Receiver and Digital DC Servo Motor.
A Fuzzy Logic Trainer Kit is available, which is interfaced to PC.
Fuzzy Logic programs can be written & tested on this kit.
A powerful software available in this lab is MATLAB. All types of
simulations in continuous and discrete domain can be performed on
MATLAB. Associated with this is the block diagram simulation software
SIMULINK, which is also used.
Experiments have been
designed to demonstrate the time response and frequency response
of control systems, performance criteria for optimizing the transient
response, and system parameter identification. Students may simultaneously
work out the solution on the PCs using MATLAB and see exactly how
the theoretical and practical observation differ.
Mechatronics Lab
Mechatronics is the synergistic
combination of precision mechanical engg, electronics control and
systems involved in the design of products and manufacturing processes.
This laboratory imparts training in the field of electronic and
mechanical systems. It was developed first in India at NSIT in 1995.
In this laboratory students acquaint themselves with the basics
of industrial automation as well as the present state of the art
of automation.
The major equipments
existing are:
1) Pneumatic and Hydraulic
Trainers
- Basic Pneumatics and
Hydraulics Modules
- Basic Electro Pneumatics
and Electro Hydraulics Modules
- Advanced Pneumatics
and Hydraulics Modules
- Advanced Electro Pneumatics
and Electro Hydraulics Modules All these systems can be interfaced
with PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers)
2) Transducers Kits
- LVDT
- Strain Gauge
- Hall Effect Transducer
- Photo Voltaic cell
- Proximity Sensors
3) 8085 & 8086 Microprocessor
Kit
4) 8031 & 8051 Micro controller Kit
5) Level and Temperature control Trainer
6) Air flow Temperature Controller
7) Speed control of DC motor
Robotics & AI Laboratory
Robotics and Artificial
Intelligence Lab is equipped with the latest ROBOT ARMS Model-1055
Make: PRAVAK and Industrial Micro ROBOT System with drive unit,
MODEL-RV-M1, Make: MITSUBUSHI.
These robots are of Five-degree of freedom.
Pravak Arms are controlled by a dedicated controllers card (SMC-10)
with external 12V DC power supply.
Industrial Micro Robot are controlled by the Drive unit, Teaching
box- Handy control switch box with cable for teaching, checking
and correcting the positions, EPROM- 256K- ROM- stores written program
and set positions.
The ROBOTS are interfaced through PC's that run MATLAB and higher
scientific programming languages like C, C++ etc.
