Biotechnology is set to revolutionize human life and the society. It is one among the most dynamic areas of science and engineering today, which represents a synthesis of evolving technologies that will propel the industries towards sustainable development. Today, this growing discipline is poised on the interface of various subjects that contribute to the growth of pharmaceutical, agricultural, food and many other industries.
The Division of Biotechnology was conceived with the aim of creating well-trained human resource to fulfill the growing demand in various sectors of Biotechnology. The Division was started during the academic session 2004-05. The division presently offers a four-year degree programme in B.E. Biotechnology with an intake of twenty students per year. At post-graduate level, Ph.D. degree programme is currently offered. Introduction of M. Tech. courses in future is under consideration. The Faculty members and the students of the Division conduct research in diverse areas of basic and applied biology. These include Microbiology, Cell & Molecular Biology and Structural & Computational Biology. The B.E. Biotechnology course curriculum is developed by a team of internationally acclaimed biotechnologists of the country with inputs from renowned subject experts. It emphasizes on understanding of basic sciences like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Modern Biology and Computer Programming followed by training in emerging areas like Bioprocess Engineering, Genomics, Proteomics, Bioinformatics and Drug Design. Components of finance and business management, intellectual property right and entrepreneurship are integrated in the curriculum in order to provide the students with a unique advantage in pursuing new careers in this exciting discipline. The course lays strong emphasis on practical training through projects, term papers, seminars, etc. Presently the students are doing training in various industries and institutions of higher learning around the country and abroad. The training provided to the students during this period is world class in nature giving them sound footing for studies/ work in technology, management and industry placements.
The Division of Biotechnology has fully functional laboratory, equipped with state of the art infrastructure for Undergraduate training as per the course curriculum. The lab is used for conducting laboratory courses, practical training and the project work. The experimental courses being run in the lab pertain to Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, Methods and Instrumentation in Biotechnology, Genetics, Immunology, Enzymology, Recombinant DNA Technology, Plant/Animal Biotechnology and Genomics/Proteomics subjects. Apart from experimental purposes, the laboratory is also used for teaching computational methods in Biotechnology by using both public domain and commercial software. All the systems are internet enabled.
The department has two more teaching laboratories, which are currently under development. They are equipped with clean room facility, washing room etc. Work on the development of third teaching lab is expected to begin soon.
The equipments available in the laboratories include Elisa plate reader, Deep freezers (-80 ºC and -20 ºC), Incubator shaker, Protein purification system, Gel documentation system, UV–Visible spectrophotometer, Refrigerators, Fermenter, Ultrafiltration stirred cells, IEF unit, Centrifuges, Microscopes, Rocker, Ice flaking machine, Laminar flow hood, Fume hood, Oven, Weighing balance, Incubators, Water baths, Autoclaves, Rotary vacuum evaporators, UV lamp, Juicer mixer grinder, Magnetic stirrers, Hot plates, Vortex mixer, pH analyzers, Colony counter, Liquid handling systems etc. Cold room and Clean room facilities are available for students. The facilities are integrated with PIV PCs, Network Laser printer, Software, CD writer, etc.
Additional departmental facilities include committee room, library and computer facility. They are being currently developed further.

Bachelor of Engineering
The current intake of students in Bachelor of Engineering (Biotechnology) course is 20. The students of the Department are highly sought after by globally reputed institutions of higher studies. Three batches of students have already graduated from the department and all of them are well-placed for their future endeavours. Students have been accepted for higher studies in science, engineering and technology as well as in management studies. They get job placements in KPOs, software, pharma sector and other biotech related industries.
Students have availed the opportunities to carry out internships in the universities and laboratories abroad with full financial support. They have attended national and international conferences to present papers/posters pertaining to their research work. They have also published papers in international journals. Students are engaged in organization of as well as participation in various technical festivals, paper presentations, business plan formulation and other extracurricular activities.
The Division offers Ph.D. degree in various advanced areas of Biotechnology like Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Computational Biology.
